Fishing the Flats!

With Captain Steve Broad

After what seemed to be eons of time sans fishing, my friend Steve invited me flats fishing in the Tomoka River Basin in Ormond Beach today. As you can see by the Red Fish in the photo above we had a good day. Steve landed a nice trout on his second or third cast with a top water lure and from that point forward we were catching a ton of non-keeper sized trout. They were still fun to catch and it was interesting to play with various tackle components to see what worked best for the conditions. Temperature was a high of 64 with pretty good winds. Tide was high and slack for a while before heading out. The bite wasn't as ferocious as it should have been, but was enough to make it a really great day with a really great guy.
It's a Keeper Too!

I used a jig head with a flat tail shad bait and managed to land this sixteen inch flounder by skipping the jig repeatedly off the bottom in shallow water. Fresh flounder is fun to catch and eat, plus there is nothing like catching a good dinner to impress your girl!

I highly recommend flats fishing to anyone who wants to enjoy a great day fishing because it is exceptionally fun, exciting, and relaxing. Thanks again Capt. Steve! As always, we had fun.

Steve and trout!
